Situations and Andy Ingamells are thrilled to present the Up Down Left Right film and digital score, produced as a result of the live performance day at the Salvation Army Ashley Road Citadel in St Pauls earlier this year.

On Saturday 11th March 2017, forty people responded to an open invitation to conduct the Salvation Army brass band. No prior musical experience was necessary, and together, over the course of the day, a new piece of music was created.

Andy Ingamells commented on the legacy and ambition for the newly devised score, stating:

“The aim is that the new score can then be played by the band and be rehearsed as a separate piece of music in its own right. All those movements and gestures from the participants will be part of the new score that is created.”

Andy continues:

“I’ve had over a year to come into the Citadel and get to know the band and rehearse with them to really understand what they do. We set up a situation where participants were invited to step out of their comfort zone and experience feeling nervous but excited about conducting a band. It’s a rare experience, and a privilege for me to be to have worked so closely with a large band and the local community on a project I’ve had a hand in creating.”

The film, hosted digitally online, also allows the experiences of March 11th to live on, as participants and new audiences will be able to witness how movements contributed in creating the new musical score, each individual action essential to the collective outcome. We also hope that the film and score will be shared and used across Salvation Army citadel’s nationally and internationally, an example of how an long-form collaboration across arts and non-arts sectors can create something new and inspiring for the people, by the people – as public art, now.

Up Down Left Right was produced by Situations, funded by the Salvation Army and Jerwood Charitable Foundation, and supported by Bristol City Council.

We would like to give special thanks to all members of the public who took part on March 11th, and to the Salvation Army Ashley road Band and Corps for their dedication throughout.
