Brunswick Cemetery Gardens Situations is working with artist Hew Locke to produce a new permanent artwork for Brunswick Cemetery in the St Paul’s area of Bristol, to be launched in autumn 2010. Bristol City Council are re-landscaping this historic site, which was created as a Unitarian Cemetery and given to the city as a small urban park in the 1980s. The new layout and planting is being designed by New Leaf Studio (www.newleafstudio.com), and Hew Locke is the artist selected to produce the new artwork. Hew’s work is often elaborate, re-making familiar symbols and images, from icons of the Royal Family to coats of arms, the use of plastic objects, sequins, silk flowers and other cheap mass-produced items. For Brunswick Cemetery, Hew will develop a new work that explores the diverse histories of the site, as well as past, present and future global economics. To find out more about Hew Locke please visit www.hewlocke.net. Hew was born in Edinburgh in 1959 and spent his formative years in Guyana. He has exhibited extensively around the UK, including Tate Britain as part of British Art Week, British Art Show 6, The V&A Museum, The New Art Gallery Walsall, Miami Art Fair, The Bluecoat Gallery, Rivington Place, and The British Museum. In America, he has shown at The Luckman Gallery LA, Atlanta Contemporary Arts, and both the Brooklyn Museum and the Museum of Art and Design in New York. He has also exhibited in Spain, Greece, France, Germany, Norway, Canada, Puerto Rico, Austria and China.
