The Shape of Things to Come: Barn-raising the Black Cloud
25th July 2009 8am - 8pm
Artists Heather and Ivan Morison led a crew of volunteers to build a remarkable temporary public artwork for Bristol’s Victoria Park on Saturday 25 July from dawn till dusk. The pavilion-like timber structure, The Black Cloud, will act as a meeting point, performance stage and shelter for events and performances for the next four months.
The irregular oval form of The Black Cloud closely references the shabono, a large, thatched structure built by the reclusive Yanomamo Amer-Indians, around an open central communal space. It was designed in collaboration with architect graduate Sash Reading (www.asarch.co.uk). The timber facade, sourced from the artists’ arboretum in Wales, has been treated using a Japanese scorching technique, creating a dark, protective shield.
The Shape of Things to Come. Barn-raising the Black Cloud was the first of three events initiated by the artists which involved raising the structure on 25 July, using local volunteer assistance alongside skilled labour, and celebrating the arrival of the shelter through communal feasting and music, reflecting the traditional Finnish talkoot and Amish barn-raising. Check out further images on flickr tagged 'Black Cloud Bristol'.
The Black Cloud is open for use by park visitors, local residents, groups and organisations throughout its temporary residency in the park.
