The symposium focussed on the Fieldwork Project (30 March - 1 April 2007) that involved artists and archaeologists Pablo Bronstein, Lottie Child, Dr. Sarah May, Dr. Sefryn Penrose, Dr. Dan Hicks and Richard Wentworth. The artists and archaeologists came back together to present and discuss their findings after going in seacrh of the past, present and future of the re-development of Bristol's central shopping district (now Cabot Circus) and were accompanied by key thinkers such as Victor Buchli, Reader in Material Culture at UCL, John Schofield, Visiting Fellow in Archaeology at the University of Bristol and Jane Rendell, Vice Dean of Research, Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment, UCL.

Material City was a programme of interdisciplinary conversations and fieldwork led by Situations in partnership with Arnolfini and the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Bristol. It was funded by the Arts Council England and by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
