Situations are delighted to announce that ‘An Endless Supply’ is the overall winner of the 2013 Book Cover Design Prize.

This summer Situations launched an open call, inviting designers, artists and illustrators to conceive an intriguing and eye-catching cover design for the first print edition of Bristol-based novella Missorts Volume II by author Tony White. The novella is a contemporary work of fiction set in the shadow of the derelict former Royal Mail sorting office next to Bristol Temple Meads station, the story follows four local characters, whose lives across two decades have been transformed by loves lost and letters found.

Having received an overwhelming response, ten designs were shortlisted before the judging panel of leading experts, including Emily King, design historian and former design editor of Frieze magazine; Fraser Muggeridge, award-winning graphic designer and educator and Tony White, author of the novella, reached their final decision.

Commenting on An Endless Supply’s design, the panel commended it for ‘communicating a restrained sense of romance’.

Author Tony White was taken by the carefully considered details of the winning design, adding ‘I love the wrap-around institutional grey ground, and the Post Office-style typeface…….I like this one more each time I look at it.’

An Endless Supply is a graphic design studio and occasional publisher currently based in Birmingham, UK, organised by Harry Blackett and Robin Kirkham. The studio works across print and digital platforms, and are open to how the two might converge or extend one another. Over the last five years they have developed a strong relationship with the contemporary art scene in the South West forging links with Bristol’s creative network. Following a residency with Plymouth Arts Centre in 2010, the studio undertook several commissions in the South West, including projects with Spike Island, Bristol Diving School, Spike Associates and Cardiff-based WARP, with whom they produced the publication ‘Soon all your neighbours will be artists’. The duo has also collaborated with Bristol-based artist Marie Toseland on a number of creative projects.

The first print edition of Missorts Vol II featuring the winning cover design will be published by Situations in December 2013, in a limited edition of 250. The novella was first published as a free Situations e-book in November 2012, to accompany Tony White’s permanent public sound work, Missorts.
