Open Office

In November 2009, Situations relocated to an office in Spike Island, an internationally renowned production and exhibition space (www.spikeisland.org.uk), enabling the programme’s library and archive to be stored in a central location. Since relocating, we have developed a new initiative, Open Office, which will make the Situations library available to students, researchers, academics and the public. This new addition to the Situations Research Resource (much of which is available online at www.situations.org.uk/research_rr) will be open on a monthly basis.

What’s Available
Since the programme’s launch in 2003, Situations has actively collected material on artistic practices outside conventional gallery or museum contexts. We have an extensive library of books and catalogues from a range of public art commissioning organisations, such as Artangel; information on internationally-renowned biennials , such as Istanbul and Skulptur Projekte Munster; as well as catalogues that document a range of artists’ practices that respond to aspecific context, location or situation.

Booking
The Situations office and library will be available one day per month, from 10am - 5pm:
2 June 2010
14 July 2010 (this is a change of date we apologise for any inconvenience)
11 August 2010

Please check the Situations diary at http://www.situations.org.uk/diary.html for any changes to dates.  Further dates will be added in due course.

To make a booking, please send an email to info@situations.org.uk, stating clearly in the subject field ‘Appointment for Situations Library’. Please state in your email the date you want to use the library and give an outline of the sorts of materials or particular book titles you would like to view. If we do not have the material or books you are looking for, we will inform you before you travel.

A staff member will email you and confirm your booking date. For directions to Spike Island, please see http://www.spike-island.org.uk/?q=map.  On arrival at Spike Island, please report to reception and ask for Situations – a staff member will show you to the office.

Guidelines
Please note that in order to search the library catalogue, you will need to bring your own laptop as there will be no IT provision in the office. A staff member will give you a short induction, which will include a demonstration of how to use the catalogue.

Please note that you will not be permitted to remove any material from the Situations Office.

Photocopying of material is possible, but you will be responsible for covering the cost and there will be a limit on the amount you can copy. Prices are:

     - A3 b&w photocopy - 15p (price with paper - 25p)

Note that colour photocopying is not available.

You will also be responsible for following photocopying and reproduction rights of individual publications, and accordingly reference any material that you might include in your personal research.
